Living in a Landmark: Apartments in Shadyside

Not many apartment dwellers in the Pittsburgh area can claim that they live in a landmark. That’s not the case for the residents of Shadyside Commons. These luxury apartments don’t just offer popular amenities and a desirable location; they are also rich with history.

As showcased in a recent Pittsburgh Post-Gazette article, these historic apartments in Shadyside have a special place in the community’s heart that dates back to 1903 and continues to this day – so much so that it was added to the National Register of Historic Places. Let’s learn more about Shadyside Commons’ journey from an innovative warehouse to an award-winning residence.

As showcased in a recent article featured in the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette, the Amberson Avenue landmark holds a special place in the community dating back to 1903.  Listed on the National Register of Historic Places, this imposing four-story brick complex was originally built for the Bindley family’s wholesale hardware business.  A successful entrepreneur in need of a new warehouse for his growing business, John Bindley refused to settle for a generic concrete building.  Bindley wanted his warehouse to have a unique character and style all its own. A fan of architecture, Bindley commissioned a warehouse-like no other, constructed from red brick and featuring eye-catching arched window accents.

The grand old Bindley building served a variety of commercial purposes over the years but was given new life in 1985 when it was transformed into a distinctive residential community.  In 2016, Reinhold Residential hired Strada Architecture and A. Martini & Co. Contractors to update the property, again preserving many of the original building’s significant architectural details.

Each of the 148 apartments offers a mix of unique design elements coupled with modern amenities, such as gourmet-style kitchens bedecked with granite countertops and stainless-steel appliances. Residents can enjoy exposed brick interior walls and 18 ft. high ceilings with beams, large windows, and wood columns. Much like the neighborhood in which it is located, Shadyside Commons is the perfect blend of classic chic and modern boldness.

Shadyside Commons is the recipient of many awards including this year’s “Best of the Best – Overall Community Appeal” from the Apartment Association of Metropolitan Pittsburgh.
