Looking for things to do in Philadelphia during COVID? You’re not alone! Philadelphians have been stuck home for the better part of a year—perfecting their at-home recipes and getting lots of Netflix time in! While the downtime has certainly brought some benefits, if you’re going stir crazy this winter, there are thankfully still ways you can safely get out and about and enjoy all that Philadelphia has to offer.
Here are a few of the top things to do in Philadelphia during COVID:
1. Keep Tradition Alive
While many of our favorite holiday traditions are off the table this year, some are still an option—through virtual offerings! For instance, the Pennsylvania Ballet’s rendition of George Balanchine’s The Nutcracker is one of the city’s most beloved holiday classics, and you can still catch all the excitement through a streaming of the show through December 25. The Lantern Theater Company is also streaming Charles Dickens’ A Christmas Carol through December 27, while the Philadelphia Orchestra posts weekly performances every Thursday night.
2. Visit an Urban Oasis
The area around Philadelphia City Hall comes to life every year for Winter at Dilworth Park—and, this year, it has quickly become one of the top things to do in Philadelphia during COVID. All visitors to the outdoor space must wear masks, and social distancing guidelines are posted. The area features Wintergarden, filled with winding pathways, twinkling lights, and lots of lush winter plants. The Rothman Ice Rink is open through late February and, even if you don’t want to take a spin on the ice, you can grab a warm spiked drink and some snacks and relax by the outdoor heat lamps. Shopping is also on the menu, with the Holiday Market through January 1, featuring dozens of artisan merchants. And all of this is set to the background of the Deck the Hall Holiday Lights, a dazzling display of lights and music projected onto the side of City Hall.
3. Drive-In Movies
The Philadelphia Film Society is welcoming back movie lovers to the cinema—in a slightly different format. At South Philadelphia’s Navy Yard, PFS features daily, drive-in showings on three different screens. Holiday classics, some of your favorite vintage action and rom-com films, and today’s latest hits are among those on the schedule.
